hey on my 88 xj 4.0 the idle is pretty high and i was trying to figure out how to ajust it. none of my manuals say much about it. found the idle screw but its screwed in deep enough so that i can't see the head. tried a few hex keys and its to tight of a spot to get a screw driver. any help would be cool. thanks.

My 88 has the same problem. Idles low when first started but speeds up over time. There is no maual way to adjust the idle on the 88 4.0 Its computer controlled. I havent been able to fix mine yet - still waiting on shop manuals to arrive. Check for vacuum leaks, idle air control valve and clean the throttle body really well...hope yours is easier to fix than mine.

Hey,

I had similar probs with my 88 XJ. Upon starting, the engine would rev very high for around 5min or more then the idle would come down. I'm sure this couldn't be good for a cold engine to race just starting. Metal grinding against metal since the oil hasn't circulated yet.

The way I solved it was to: 1. Clean the Throttle Body and Stepper Motor 2. Replace TPS 3. Replace Crank Sensor

Thx, Phil
