I have a 2002 I6 5spd and I've read the specs of the TJ on this site, and I'm not sure if my gas tank is 19 gal.
The light comes on just as the needle reaches the red zone at about 255- 260 miles on my trip meter The gage will show E but, Iím only putting in 14 sometimes 15.5 gal in the tank.
I've checked to see if there is any indication of the capacity on the tank it's self and didn't find anything
Is there a tank size in between the 15 and 19 gallon or, is my gas gage just not accurate?

Should be 19. Jeep gas gauges have been know to get terribly innaccurate.

I can drive my Cherokee until the needle is BELOW empty and the low fuel light has been on for 100 years and STILL it only takes about 17 gallons. I like that built-in reserve. Mr. Green

Most vehicle gas gages are for reference only. Never expect them to be accurate or reliable for that matter. There are numerous things that can cause inaccurates at any time, Jeep owners know this well.
Wink If you wait for the bell to chime, it's gas-up time!

You have the 19. I fill up at or before the gas light with about 15 gallons. I bought it new with the 19 which used to be optional. Both my 97 4cyl and 98 Sahara both are inaccurate in exactly the same way and the 98 has had all the trail use so abuse I don't think matters much. My 2001 XJ was closer at about 3 gallons to empty. Nature of the beast! I did drain and clean out the tank on the 97 and replaced exactly 4 gallons and added exactly 15 a few miles away at the nearest station.

I own a Jeep dealership. Jeep has told us that the light comes on at roughly 3 gallons left. But like the other guys have said this is a little different with each vehicle.

I have heard rumors about some older Wranglers (91-95) that used the same tank as the Cherokee. The factory limited the filler neck somehow so you could only put in 15 gal, even though the tank was the same 19 gal molding. People started modifying the filler to allow the full capacity. I have also heard that this same thing is done to the TJs. I honestly don't know if it is true or not. I've heard a couple different versions.

Apparently this is also the reason that TJs gas gauge drops hard on the last quarter tank and sometimes takes more fuel than others.

Has anyone heard about this? Anybody that's dropped their TJ tank know if this is true or BS? Anyone completed this mod or have more info? Please send me a personal message if you've heard anything.

Here is where I first found the info http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/fuel/15to20gal/

Here is a different version that explains that the TJ pickup is raised, so it runs dry before the tank is empty:

I would love to hear from anyone who has hands-on experience with this. Thanks!

I read one of the links that Code3TJ posted, and my question is. Why would the factory limit a 19 gal. tank to only 15 gallons?
I do understand the safety aspect of a anti-spillback valve as stated in the article, but why so long?
The placement of a check valve weather itís deep in the tank or up by the gas cap to me would have bearing on how safe the fuel system is. So if itís true, why didnít the engineers resolve this problem?

Auto makers tend to make cars go for 300 miles or so, regardless of your mpg.
I once owned an 89í Suburban that got 9 mpg with a 40 gal tank and it went about 300 miles. I also owned a 93 Toyota Truck that got 25 mpg with a 13 gal tank, again 300 miles. My TJ, 260 corrected miles to the tank even though Iím getting 19+mpg. So their basically limiting us on total miles traveled. Just an observation.

I donít want to sound like a lawyer but, to advertise the fuel capacity as 19 gal then restrict it to 15gal. with a check valve is false advertisement, and might I add that itís just plane stupid.
