hi. i have a new problem with my 2001 jeep cherokee, 42K miles.

at ide, about every 30 seconds a sound comes from the engine, accompanied by a jump of 100 or 200 RPMs. The sound sounds like something is turning on in the engine compartment and it lasts for about 3 seconds. it is happening even when it is driving at slow speeds. is anyone familiar with this problem? is it even a problem? i have had the truck for 5 months and it just started doing this today. Thanks.

Is your heater/defroster on? AC compressor kicks on and off when on defrost.
Have you opened the hood and listened, could be the fan kicking in and out.

yea heater is on, but heat has been on for months. this is new. fan was already running when this happens. i opend hood and sound is quite loud but not sur ehow to explain it. it doesnt sound like the engine is excelerating...i wonder why the RPMs are jumping upward a few hundred and then back down, over and over.

thanks for reply

It sounds like the a/c compressor to me also. Locate the compressor and watch to see if you see it engage when the noise starts and idle goes up. The clutch is electric and right behind the pulley. When engaged it clicks and the piece behind the pulley will spin. It cycles whenever the defroster is on even in the winter.
