What was the last year the cherokee was made? I was thinking that once I pay off my 02 PT Cruiser I want to sell it and get a Cherokee. I like the regular Cherokees better than the Grand Cherokee.

2001 was the last year for the un-grand Cherokee.

I think I'm going to go with a used Grand Cherokee. My step-son says that the Laredo are pretty good.

I want one that has decent pick-up but good on gas also.
So V-8 or V-6?

Actually, the biggest plant in the Cherokee XJs (read: Non-Grands...) is 4.0L, which equates to 6-cylinder. The other engine that was available on the 90's + models is a 2.5L, which is a 4-cylinder. The XJs didn't have 5.0L engines in them unless somebody dropped one in for themselves. For all your offroad and pulling needs, a 4.0L will do just fine.

Automatics are more common in the newer XJs than stick-shifts, so finding one is pretty cool (I don't drive stick though... Rolling Eyes ). This link here will give you some great info on XJ specs from 1984 to 2001.

Happy hunting!!!

Looks like you're thinking about a Grand now. I really liked my 94 with the 4.0 straight six. I don't think any Cherokees come with a V6, only in the early 80's and those were GM 2.8's. No where near the power and durability of the 4.0. The Grands are much more comfortable than the XJs and I like not having leafs in the rear. My neice now has my old Grand with somewhere around 170k it still runs well. I'd have no problem going back to one but am not sure if I'd want the Mopar V8. Good luck!

Yea I think that when I get ready to get a new one I will go with a Grand. I want a comfortable ride and only want 4x4 for when the snow hits. I don't do any off roading.

Yeah I heard a bunch of bad stuff about grands and electrical, fuel problems and as far a mopar engines I think the 4.0 was the best. The grands offered the 318 -360 motors I think and they aren't exactly popular. Well I am a ford guy with great respect for the strait six 4.0
