I just bought an 87 with a bad 4.2 engine 5 speed. I started pulling the engine yesterday and there are two bolts on top of the bell housing. I thought they were 10MM until I rounded one of them off. Crying or Very sad What size are they? And do you need a special socket for it? This is my first jeep and it seems like they engine accessories are part metric and part american. Help please

they are a 12pt bolt. I think they are 11 or 12 mm or 7/16, I forget off the top of my head.

Your best bet would prob be to find the closses 12pt socket you can and pound it on and hope theyturn out.

I had to drill the heads off of mine then I replaced them with regular bolts

They are tough to get at. An offset metric 12 point and alot of elbow grease worked for me. Can't remember the exact size but I got a whole set from Harbor Frieght for under $20. Try reaching over the skid plate with a long socket extension to get at the others.

if you rounded the heads off i suggest going to sears or another quality tool store and buying a set of "bolt out's " here at sears.com
they come in very handy!

be warned you won't be able to reuse the bolts or nuts again after using this tool so be prepared to get replacement ones.

good luck!
