I think the stock speakers in my buddy's 88 2-dr were in the rear hatch.

I don't have any pics, but it's really easy to do. Even if you don't have them, the hatch should be pre-wired and pre-drilled for them. Mine was. 5 1/4" will fit. These made a huge difference versus just having speakers in the door panels.

There are two small screws at the top of the plastic, after undoing these the panel is held in with those stupid plastic tabs (they look like christmas trees). Pry the thing loose slowly. You'll break tabs, and you'll break the mounts off the panel. I'm thinking about putting some dynamat in there to get rid of the distortion and found a nifty little website showing how to use screws and drywall anchors that happen to fit perfectly in the holes on the hatch. The panel has always rattled and I'm thinking that this will make the cab quieter.

you can use the 5 1/4's , but you can get 6 1/2's in there, and the 6 1/2's will have better midrange. I can take pics and post them but that will take a little. I'll post them later. Anyway. I had infiniti's from my other vehicle that I transfered to the XJ, and they came with mounting brackets. So i mounted one to the 5 1/4 holes, then i mounted the speaker to the 6 1/2 holes on the bracket. the previous owner already dyna matted the truck, bastard didnt leave the stereo in it though! Required no fabrication. I dont hear any rattling, as shotty of a job as the dynamatt was. Only drawback is i had 3-way's (2-ways are all you need, these are too high) and they have the tweeter mounted in the middle. which protrudes past the stock paneling. So i have it off for now, till i cut the whole and use the infiniti speaker covers. Gotta do what ya gottado. Only problem i see with my front install is the covers are going to bump right up against the window crank handle. Have to sort of pinch the knob , so to speak. Haha

Ps. hehe those christmas trees are also referred to as retaining clips.
