I've seen lots of write-ups on chopping the section of roof behind the rear seat on the XJ/ZJ/WJ, and many threads of people saying how cool it is....but I'm still wondering "why??". As in whats the purpose of chopping that roof section out, especially when you close off the section directly behind the seats (in front of the "bed" that's now created).

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not ragging on anyone for doing it. I fully support the idea that anyone is free to do whatever they want to their rigs. I even half-backed my S10 Blazer years ago, in an attempt to mimic the full size Blazer and gain the "open-top" feeling. It was a failure on the latter without chopping the section above my head, and I found out that rain water gets sucked inside the front cab section when it's raining...

But anyways, back to my question...if you cap off the back, obviously it's not for getting that open top feeling. I don't see where any extra storage room is gained. Is it just for easier access to the spare tire and tool boxes that are back there?

Just park it in a small parking lot by a bunch of bars and someone is bound to back into it at some point.

I don't think you'll shave that much weight off to call it massive. To maintain the rigidity of the unibody, you need to add bracing and supports that negate most of the weight savings.

i plan on doing one to make it a hunting rig.i lke the cherokee and i can't fit in a MJ cab its just to short for me.i want to be able to have a short bed to stuff my crap into and still have a nice closed in area.i usually have a friend and the dog with me and my dog doesn't ride outside in the bed.

i already have the rear section of the MJ just waitng for when i find a two door.oh ya did i mention i wanted to do this to a 2 door to make it kind of an extra cab with suicide quad doors.
pretty much along these lines

then a very bad photochop of what mine would look like

I did it because.............................................................. I just wanted to.. I dont really have a good reason.. But It was fun hacking the crap out of my rig.. rofl

The doors I did because I dont have air and I wanted improved circulation and better visibility...

For what its worth.. My rig weighs about 3300# now...

Mr. Green

A guy in Mississippi did something similar to his XJ..

Pic is small but this is what It looked like a while back..

He has changed it a little since then but you get the picture.....
