This sounds like your T.C., if u still have 249, I would guess Viscous coupler. Does it "shimmy" or shake when u turn at low speeds? Other thought would be front differential, when under load it vibrates, no load, no vibration. This would ALSO go with not "lockup"(you mean going into 4WD mode?) Let us know!

I still have the 249case,even if it is the viscous coupler shouldn't it still lockup at 60mph on a straight road?
I tried driving at 60mph then turned off O/D and back on it wen't to O/D but sometimes it would not lock up again, when I drove it thru the gears from stop it would usually go to lock up.

Isn't there a solenoid that activates the lock up?Loose connector or dirty solenoid maybe?
Thanks for the help.

Problem analyzed, they connected some analyzer to it and there are two solenoids that control the fluid pressure that are not working, only need to remove the pan and filter and replace them but I'm gonna have the tranny upgraded as well (something to do with the valve body,a spring and some other stuff.)
When under very little acceleration it shifted fine most of the time but give it some gas and it would not shift normally and usually not shift from 2nd at all.

my 95 was having trouble shifting for a while. I finally tried replacing the overdrive solenoid inside the tranny. Problem fixed. It was kind of a messy job though..

Damn it sh%t fu$k crap....had the trannys solenoids replaced and a shift kit/upgrade installed, still same shit, hangs for a long time thru gears sometimes wont shift at all, suddenly drops to neutral.
Cost me $1200 in repairs the shop said to try and replace the ECU they allready checked and cleaned all connectors from the ECU and checked the relay.
They had an analyser connected while driving around and the pressure drops
suddenly, which they say pointed to the solenoids at first but now it seems the ECU drops voltage to the solenoids.
pissed
damn this sucks,I have almost $3000 in it in one month shock
Gonna try to borrow en ECU,are they all the same for the 1996 ZJ?

YO,

It sounds like you've got to find a better mechanic. Or at least one not soooooo expensive. You've got a 46RE transmission. Very common in the jeeps and 1/2 ton dodges. Good news for you, since the solenoids didn't fix it you've either got Torque converter probs or some internal leakage somewhere between the internals of the trans. Your best bet is to get a rebuilt unit. However there are a lot of mods you can do to this trans. The dodge 3/4 and 1 ton diesel use a trans very similar to the one in the jeep. The case is different but find someone who KNOWS trannys and how to swap some hard parts, like planet gears with more pinions and steel instead of aluminium, and possibly a direct and forward drum with more clutches, and if they don't know what Transgo is and don't use their kit go somewhere else. Will cost some $$ but won't be as much as you've spent already. If you know how R&R your trans yourself. When your finished you'll have one hell of a reliable unit!!!!

It was the Lockup band in the converter that broke, junk jammed the radiator, tranny overheated, everything is rebuilt know.
PS I did find a proper mechanic and he knew right away.
90% it's the lockup band that causes these failures.

My converter dude said If mopar would have built a good coverter like FORD furious you would drive these JEEP's 300.000 miles without any issues.
