Ok...so I broke this myself Mr. Green . The windshield defroster didn't work on the jeep because the baffle/door that directs the flow up to the windshield wasn't moving when I'd slide the selector over to defrost. I harnessed (from the ceiling) the entiere dash unit and removed it from the jeep. I left all harnesses plugged in except for the passenger side airbag (battery disconnected entire time). I think I found the culprit to the defroster issue (broken pneumatic plastic motor arm), but in the process my curiosity made the situation worse.

Don't know what they're called, but there are those 7 or so pastel-colored tubes (thought they were wires) Sad coming off the back of the fan control console. I unplugged the connector in the middle of the tube, and I think I may have released air pressure - because *now* from what I can tell, all the doors/baffles fo rthe HVAC system are controlled pneumatically, and I think I let whatever pressure was in the system out when I did that.

Result?

I get it all put back together, but when I slide the vent selector over it does JACK. I can crank the fan speed up all I want, but the only place air is blowing are my side-window defroster vents.

Does anyone know what I've done and how to fix it?

I'm not an expert in this at all, these are just my guesses. I am pretty sure you're right ni saying that they are pneumatically controlled. Thats why when you have the engine off and move the controls, it sounds like air moving. But I thik they run on vaccum, not pressure. So when you disconnected it you actually let air into the system, but I wouldn't think that would do anything. I would THINK, that eventually the vaccum pressure in the lines would be restored, assuming the connection is still air tight. Like I said though, I'm no expert. Nor does this help you in any way, but thats why its a discussion board.

'Dubya,

You're probably right - if so I sincerely HOPE that the vacuum will rebuild, 'cause if not I'm not quite sure what to do. I havea Haynes manual (sucks) and it doesn't even touch on the HVAC system - not that I've found anyway.

shoot me your email and i'll send you the pertinent chapter in the factory service manual for the HVAC system on '97 tj's. it has some good info such as checking out your checkvalve under the hood, testing for sufficient vacuum, and diagrams for insuring all the colored hosed are in the proper spots.
