Hey there...

I own a 2003 Jeep TJ sport. 4.0L inline six.

After a particularly nasty freezing rain storm, I got it stuck in the driveway.

After several minutes of rocking it back and forth (and going from 4H to 4Low), I got it out.

Now, when it's idling, it has a really nasty rumble to it (whereas, before it was steady and silent).

At highway speeds, it is producing a noticeable "rumble" that wasn't there before either.

It also feels like it is working harder to push the vehicle forward.

My thought is that the excessive rocking back and forth in 4wd has "burned" up some of the transfer case fluid, causing it now to be too low.

Any thoughts???

I can say that switching from 2wd to 4wd (high and low) still operates fine (there's no grinding or difficulty in switching...).

Also - i've noticed a few quarter-sized, yellow marks on the snow after i've moved the jeep. This is transfer case fluid, is it not? (which is why I figure the fluid must be low?????)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Deadmedic

I doubt you did anything to the tcase internals. Thats an amazing tough part of your rig.

Rumble? Tough to say what that could be.

Possibly, you have have knocked something loose on the exhaust system.

Are you still under warrentee?

hey.... thanks for the reply...

Nope... its not under warranty anymore.

Im pretty sure it's not an exhaust problem... the "rumble" (for lack of a better term) seems to be coming from within the cab... (you can "feel" it through the brake and gas pedal)...

also, with the vehicle running, there is no audible sounds coming from the under the hood (manifold) or otherwise....

If there WAS a problem with the differentials, could this cause the engine to be idling they way it is ????? (to clarify, it seems like the engine wants to stall out.... different from a vibration or loud banging...)

Thoughts?

The fluid in your t-case is red. It doesn't burn up either.

Not likely. Gear lube is yellowish when brand new. Get it spinning for a couple miles and it turns dark gray.
