I am new to the board and fairly new to jeeps. I currently own a 90 YJ with a 4 banger but I am very seriously considering a Rubicon. My question is somewhat odd. Has anyone ever heard of someone customizing the rear seat of a wranger to fit 3 small passengers? Shocked I am thinking of a Beard Super Bench Seat in aprox 48 in width with the fenders cut down slightly for height considerations. I need seating for 5 but do not really want to go with an XJ. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Nope...never heard of it. One of the problems with widening the area between the wheel wells is that the tires are right on the other side of the sheetmetal, at least at stock height. My guess is that if DC could have widened that area, they would of. With all the competition to have more cargo space etc, you would think they would have squeezed as much as possible when they designed the TJ tub.

Buy an Unlimited and customize a side facing seat that runs lengthways the back of the jeep.

You could prob seat five just on that seat!!

i would think that if in an accident and, god forbid, one of the young ones got hurt...you may be found at fault. modding something of that sort may have some legal implications due to the safety nature of it.

that being said - we used to place a little wooden stool in between the front seats on my dad's cj-8....that way both boys could ride with him in the woods trapping long ago. i know, no better - and even worse - than trying to belt them in. just wanted you to know that even while seeing the possibility of a bad thing - it's still worth it in the end Smile

No, it's not.

The vehicle itself is the same width. You gain a very little bit of hip room due to the different in the wheel well shape/size in the Unlimited. The wheel wells provide a bit more room as they are not as directly next to you in the Unlimited.
