Hello,

I have a question about my dads 98 Cherokee. It's lifted 2 inches with 31x10.50's on it. I was driving it to work for him the other day cruising down the road at about 45MPH when some idiot in front of me slams on their brakes because they missed a turn. I also had to slam on the brakes, in doing so the Jeep pulled to the right side quite hard and at slower end of the braking it made this really weird grinding sound. Are his brakes shot, or is it something else?

Thanks,
Matt

Sounds like the brakes to me.

Where is the grinding sound, front or rear brakes? If it's the rear, one of the springs or the the adjuster cable may have dislodged or broken. If the adjuster is frozen (common) then a sudden hard hit to the brakes could disrupt things on a poorly adjusted setup. Best bet is to open it all up and check things out.

It feels like the front brakes. They operate fine at normal stopping speeds and distances, but the abrupt stop I had to make seemed to reveal a problem. I'm mostly curious what part of the system would cause this?

Thanks,
Matt

It sounds obvious but, you aren't talking about the ABS are you?

No. It's not equipped with ABS.

Pull the wheels off and check. We can't tell you what exactly may have caused the problem....we're on the other side of a computer. You've got the Jeep.

If you think it's the front, do them first. Not hard to examine for evidence of any grinding on disc brakes. If the rotors look clear of any grinding and the pads have lots of pad left, then move on to the rear.
