i have a 98 grand cherokee 5.9 limited. i want to do the transfer case swap so i have the 2 wheel drive option. I have been reading all of the forums and have gotten a little confused. i guess my question is which transfer case would work best with my year? the 242 or 231? And what is the difference between the 242 and 231? thanks

242 has fulltime and its a good t case but I would suggest the 231 just because the 242 has a planetary set that tend to break under heavy amounts of torque.. (which the 5.9 could produce..)

Check the tech section there is a writeup on T case swaps.. Its for the 242 but it will work the same for a 231...

What year of cherokee was most common for the 231 t-case? And where on the t-case is it tagged?

It's on the rear of the case (the circular red checkerboard thing).
They were used on 87-01 XJ's.

You could also Just look at the Shifter.....

2wd-----------N -----4 Hi--------4lo = 231

2WD --------4part time ----N-----4fulltime----4 low=242

Not absolutly positive on shift locations but you get the point... Just looking inside at the shifter will tell you what case it is...

Good luck..

I bought a 94 GC Laredo 5.2 V8 with a broken TCase #249. It has 151K in it.

When I went to Autozone.com to see how much the TCase for this auto is, it only shows Tcases 231 and 242. I begin to wonder if the reason for the Tcase to be broken is because it is not 231 nor 242.

Anybody knows what TCase(s) can be installed on this vehicle?

In one of your replies, you recommended 231 for V8 because it can handle heavy amounts of torque. I will just look for 231, then. Yes, a write up will help. I will appreciate if one is written. If not, I will just take your word that it works the same.

I still have a couple of questions, though. I am not sure if the gears in the 249 is good because the tcase has dried up. There is a 1.5" x 3" hole at the bottom. If it is still in good condition, I could use that one to put it into the 231 case. Is that correct?

The next question is about the shifter/stick. It currently has 4HI - 4LO only. I also need to replace that with what is in 231, won't I?

I will probably do the job next month. The temp has gone down to below freezing again this week.

Thanks a lot for your input.

You won't have to replace the "stick" but the shift linkage on the 249 is longer than what you'll find on the 242 and 231 (correct?) You'll need to swap the old, longer linkage to the new T-case and then check the donor vehicle or the local junk yard for the shift indicator to show the proper selection.

I swapped them when I did my swap but had to swap them back...The linkage did not work without the correct arm...
But thats just me.. Mr. Green

Swampy,
Don't forget to remind them to get a t-case with the proper V-8 Shaft length.

I just did a T-Case swap. On My 96 4.0 W/249 to a 98 231 out of a 4.0 XJ. I have a 3.5 Tuff Country lift. It was a Bolt up to the aw4 same input shaft. I used the Linkage from the 249 and the shift arm that came on the 231. My rear Driveshaft was too long so I cut 1 inch off the output shaft and 1 inch off the driveshaft slipyoke still leaving 4.5 inches of spline engagement. (better than the XJ had stock). Didn't bother with the 4wd indicator. used the speed sensor out of the 249.
