Yeah the main unit...

Jeep tells me its under the dash behind the steering colum and that its about the size of a "Post-It" pad. I cant find it.

I have the Haynes and the Chilton manual....neither one say anything about the module.

Sorry to resuscitate such an old post but I have the same problem - can't find the module. It is not in the upper console and I can't find it under the dash.

This is a 96 GC Laredo with an aftermarket alarm that looks like it was installed by a gorilla with a hacksaw. I believe the remote entry is radio not infrared as I have no red "dome" anywhere inside the car.

When driving down the road sometimes the door locks will repeatedly engage and disengage, and the interior lights will turn on and off. Sometimes the interior lights will turn on in the middle of the night for no apparent reason, killing the battery.

I don't care about the keyless feature and since the module is over $200 I would just remove the module to see if that solves the problem - if I could only find the darned thing.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Well, I found it. In case anyone else is looking for it: the 1996 JGCL has the remote keyless entry module as an integral part of the passenger door module. If you take out both the driver and passenger door modules you will see that there is some extra circuitry on the PDM. No way to replace just the RKE module, must replace whole PDM.

Hope that helps someone.

Was it the Jeep module that you were looking for or was it the aftermarket one? Aftermarket keyless entry and alarm systems are filled with problems and notoriously unreliable. When I had my blazer, I knew a girl that parked in the same parking deck as me, I had the stock gm keyless entry and she had an aftermarket one. Whenever I unlocked or locked my doors her car did the same. However, the reverse was not true, her aftermarket key fob couldn't unlock or lock my truck's doors. So that may have been your problem if your aftermarket system was getting interference that caused it to operate your doors.

Furthermore, I'm not sure of the exact number, but I know for a fact that vehicle manufacturers don't have to make more than a few thousands of (a guess-10,000) different keysets and the same would go for keyless entry units. My Grandfather had bought a new Chevy truck a few years ago and by pure chance the keys for it would work the doors and ignition of my Aunt's Cadillac. So there is a slim possibility or a snowballs chance that you had neighbours with the same Daimler-Chrysler keyless entry system and it was causing yours to operate.
