My 98 cherokee suffers badly from excessive steering play. (about 30-35 degrees each way from centered)

It has a 3 1/2" rubicon lift with 31 x 10.5 tires.

I dont have a problem with speed wobbles & it tracks straight. I have checked the front end & all steering components seem in good condition. The freeplay feels like maybe its the steering box.

Do XJ's have a common problem with steering box's ?

thanks for your time.

after lifting my xj & putting 32x11.5 tires on, I had alot of play that only got worse

after replacing all the joints in the front, it got a little better, but other peeps still hate driving my jeep

there is an adjustment for the power steering box, although I have never messed with it

further more about hte steering boxes going bad...........I really havent heard about them going bad alot...........mine leaks.....I use Lucas fluid in it, helps slow down the leak

I personally would like to know how to get rid of some of the play myself....sorry I'm no help

I'm thinking the excessive play comes with the territory

Look for one that's not leaking. Wink

Is it an XJ? They sell rebuild kits, if it's only the seals. Be sure to check all your steering components for wear. I installed a gear box from a 1999 Dodge Durango 4x4 with the V8. It is a little more touchy - something to think about if that bothers you. Wink

hey what do you mean by touchy? More tight? I like a good tight steering. If you mean touchy as in, problematic, and picky, as in only works when it wants to, well, maybe that rebuild is for me. LOL

No, it can be overly responsive. As in, I can now easily turn my 13.5" wide tires will sitting stopped on pavement. Had to fight a bit to do that before. It's much easier to turn the wider tires, but it's something to think about if you do a lot of street driving.

I may look into that

Nope, the exterior dimensions are basically the same. Just be careful that you don't cross thread the power steering lines when you're installing them because it's a funky angle. Wink

Did you do any steering correction when you lifted it? I haven't yet and I was told by a friend in know that I need to get the angles right if I was it to steer right. As it is mine is fine but it's a little "twitchy" when driving down the road. At first I was almost scared to drive it but now that I'm used to it I think it handles fine, lol. I'm still going to fix the problem though.
