This is my baby - i bought it used in '03 with 55K miles on it... Its still pretty much stock - but i'm looking to do some things to it as I get some extra cash - which seems to be never. I drool when my jeep parts/accessories catalogs come. Anyone have any tips on what they would do 1st? I was given a crome light bar for free - so i have to buy some lights and have it installed. I finally found a jeep guru around here with a shop, so i don't feel as worried about having someone modify it. I got a bikini top for it for Christmas - so can't wait for it to warm up already!! (as i look outside and see it snowing here in great Ohio)

Peg

Just do yourself a favor. Take it out and have fun. Everybody and their grandmother will tell you what you need, but your jeep on the trail will tell you what you really need. Wink

Well reason the top & doors were on was that i just bought it THAT day... that was probably an hour after i signed the paper work... not to mention until I bought the hardtop pully system for the garage there was no way I (120# girl who admits of not having lots of upper body strength) could take the top off by myself... in fact it was sad but i was only able to have the top off once that summer - the one time a (strong) girl friend helped me out... but now with my garage system i'm all set! I still don't have any lift kits & same tires are on as in the picture... i think because i have no idea about the differences in the kits and so forth that i'm scared to buy something and it be inferior for the jeep. Can anyone tell me what name brand of kits are really good & which ones to definately stay away from? I moved to a new town & someone just told me about a good jeep guy in the area - so now i feel confident of having someone do that kind of work on it since he is a jeep enthusiast as well. Anyone know any good trials in Central Ohio that i can test it out on? I want something for beginner so i don't totally mess my jeep up since i have no idea how to properly handle the 4x4ing in extreme trails... so far my extent of 4x4ing was driving around crazy in a friends corn field after it was harvested...

Where do you guys get most of your aftermarket 'toys' to add to the jeep? I get the 4WheelDrive Hardware catalog (4wd.com) but am scared to order anything because of my lack of knowledge of this stuff. Maybe someone can educate me a little on what exactly all the main parts that most people who 4wd upgrade actually do. Like i see in the pictures where the wheels are all over the place - one is like a foot higher than the other on a rock... now is that axles, shocks, ? Also - i hear everyone talking about getting bigger muddin tires... question i wondered about is - can i use my current rims (nice alloy ones) for the bigger tires or do i have to replace those as well? Sorry if i sound dumb about this stuff - but if i don't ask i'll never learn. I read some posts and i have no idea what they are talking about. I can do normal stuff on the jeep - like i change my own oil, i replaced my battery, etc... but when it comes to more complicated stuff i feel lost in the jungle. Thanks!

My husband did a great write up when he lifted my jeep.

Go here: http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1121&highlight=

It has everything he bought, who he bought if from along with a write up about the lift. We have done a lot a business with Dirk at DPG.

I have a 2 and half OME and I LOVE IT. If you read throught it I'll mention the good and bad.

I think I said this before, take it out stock and like Kizer says, the jeep will tell you what it wants.

At the time, I had been only wheeling a few times and didn't want anything extrem so I went with the 2 and half inch lift and 32in tires. It's been two years since I've had that lift on the jeep and I still love it, but it's time to move up. Steve is toying with either putting a 1in body lift or adding some 1in pucks to the suspention and doing an SYE (the second choice is the more expensive one). Once that's done I'll put 33in tires and look to regear in the next year or two.

As for the replacing the rims, that will all depend on the lift you put on and the size tire. If you just want to go up to a 31 those will fit stock jeeps and you don't need to lift it. If you do lift your jeep you will probably need new rimms. That has to do with back spacing which I kinda sorda no nothing about.

For now think of where you want to go, 1in, 2in, 3in.

I would say wheel your TJ stock for a little bit. Find some trails in your area that you'd like to go on, and take a day for some fun with the Jeep.

Wheel with it and as you feel comfortable on one trail, move to the next until you get a good feel for what it can do stock.

As for your wheels, it depends. If you want to go to a 12.50" wide tire, you won't be able to use those nice alloy wheels.

If you're planning on 4" of lift, like 1fox2go said, I run Superlift, and I like it. it's cheap and I bought it out of http://www.quadratec.com/

Just be careful with them and do your research, sometimes they aren't the cheapest.

Other lifts that are good:
Rubicon Express (many Jeepers here and elsewhere swear by their RE lift)
Terraflex
Full-Traction
Tuff Country/Rough Country (1fox2go runs this set up and likes it)

Lifts that don't work so well with the TJ:
Rusty's (I've heard some bad things with them in general)
Fabtech

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to create a topic or send a PM to one of us!

Hope That Helps,
Stevo Very Happy
