I have a jeep grand Cherokee that stalled while driving over water. The water level was just about as high as the tires. Water got to the interior of the car and it sat on the water for about 30 min.

After drying everything, I found that the air filter is wet and when trying to start it water came out fro the exhaust, about 3 buckets. After a while it started but it rattles so I shut it off immediately.

The mechanic thinks the rods are bent and that I need a new engine. Is this true?

Any recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Did you pull a spark plug before starting it to let the water out? Given what you described, it sounds very likely that when you hydrolocked the engine (the engine ran until the water stalled it, right?) which can cause all sorts of nasty engine problems. I take it you don't have a rod through the oil pan or the block?

I agree buy a new engine. Next time pull all the spark plugs and crank it up to purge the cylinders. Water out the tail pipe isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Apparently I did everything wrong, next time i'll know what to do. I got a quote for an used engine with 75K for 2,000 plus install 1,000.

Expensive lesson.

Thanks for the advice guys...

Rock on is partle correct... Leaving the doors open on a long hot day will dry it pretty good but you will need to leave them open all day... Maybe even 2 days...

I had water up to the top of my dash once... I turned off the egine my self and drained all fluids and pulled the plugs before I even attempted to start it..

Also .. I pulled my seats and sat them on my front lawn and left the doors open for a weekend.. It all dried out fine and the jeep is still running to this day...

Sorry to hear about your damage but next time make sure you pull the plugs and change the oil if you stall out in deep water.. IF you got water into the filter canister you must have been pretty deep...

Good luck..

my Jeep has not seen a trail, mud or water in over a year!

I just pulled my carpet last weekend.......

under the carpet was soaked with mud, water, mold, slim, & rust.......

I sanded down the rust, & painted with bedliner...

added drain plugs....

point being....

water does not dry out when it is under a rubber mat(even with doors open for a weekend)....it will stay wet & rust....just speaking from personal experience

no need to say anything further. Cool

I assumed that anyone that is driving in deep water would have already removed the drain plugs.. But I guess that is a bad thing to do...

So.. Everyone go out and pull back your carpet and pop out those plugs .. If you do not have plugs.. Drill holes... Mr. Green
