This intermitent stalling problem has me pulling out my hair. I know this post is long, but please bear with me. I have a 69 grand with a 4.0L. The jeep will stall at seemingly random times. When i come to a stop light, it will be running fine, then just cut out suddenly. If I am on the highway, the engine will clunk, rpm will go to zero, battery voltage drops (this all happens in about a seconds time) then everything comes back up to normal and the jeep continues driving down the road. This usually happens about 3-5 times in a 5 minute period, then goes away till the next time i drive it. Other times, as I come to stop lights, the idle will go real low, like 250rpm and the car. When this happens, i get a rotten egg smell from the exhaust, usually this is atributed to a lean condition and the catalytic converter heating up, right? I have replaced the following parts trying to fix this problem: fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, upstream oygen sensor, crank position sensor, throttle position senor, idle air control valve, all the 10 and 15 amp mini fuses in the fuse block under the hood, air intake temp sensor, coolant sensor, i have cleaned the throttle body and replaced the gasket, changed the spark plugs, cap, rotor, and plug wires. I think thats it. The most recent change was the air intake temp sensor. I got 3 days of great use, about 100 miles, with no stall or rough idle conditions. That was sunday, then yesterday, wednesday, the problems started again. The vaccum seems fine at idle. I have no idea where to go from here. I just ordered a replacement computer from ebay, but my mechanic said everything from the computer is working just fine. He had it on his lab scope and could see no problems. Of course, that was only while the car was idling. Has anyone else had this problem? Please help me.

I had a problem at one time where my Jeep would stall out everytime I turned right... It ended up being a bad ground cable on my battery.. I am not saying thats your problem but give your wires a good looking over... It actually sounds like what mine does when the TPS goes out.. It sputters and runs crappy til its warm and then runs fine... I keep a spare TPS in my Jeep for this very reason...

The odd part is ..I can reuse the old TPS later on and it will work fine... Confused

It makes me think I am having computer problems but I dont know .. My Jeep runs fine with the new TPS .. and it usually last for a month or so.. Then It will act up again... And I swap the old one back in..

I wish I could help but thats all I got..

Maybe someone else has something to offer..

Sounds like the Crank Angle Sensor located on the top, drivers side of the bellhousing. I suffered the same problem, minus the rich condition. It would just stall completely while driving. Sometimes it would start back up on its own and other times it wouldn't. I swapped out the sensor for a new one($60) and it has not happened since. That was about 3-4k miles ago.
