I was outside putting my new brake lines on ( Very Happy , but took a while, one bleeder was absolutley stuck, but got them one, with new speed bleeders) but A guy pulls up and asks if I know about cars. I say sure, some. He says his car won't start unless he gets a jump, then it runs fine, and if he turns it off it will start, but only within the next minute. OK- to me this would be an obvious dead battery as first try. He took it to a shop, this is a foreign man, his english is not very good, but the shop said they tested everything and it was going to be 500$ for a new starter. I was like, what? This guy can start his car if he gets a jump, how can it be his starter. Any way, I told him I was that I would go get a new battery first at a autoparts store, they can help you put in in. You still can't start, at least try another shop. Does this seem to be about the right thing to have said?

Sounds like a dead alternator or battery to me!

You gave sound advice IMHO.

Yea, that's as good a place as any to start. A simple bad cell will drain the others over time...especially on a standard lead acid battery.

And you're probably right. Starters like so many other components either work or they don't work. Not typically intermittently.

Code is right too, should have asked where to send the bill. Very Happy

X2

If it just needs a jump to start then dies after a little while of running it is prob the alt not charging.

get the batt load tested (free at any auto zone) if it is good have them test the alt.

They are fairly honest with you and dont try to dick you around most of the time

I had the same thing happen to me in my Jeep. Turns out it was the combination between a dead cell in battery and a loose wire grounding out in the dashboard. I would get jumped off just fine, but when I shut it off it would not turn back on.
