I'm still trying to get all my information correct. I was under the impression that in 1996 the 4.0 liter engine had the same torque at 1,000 rpm lower than earlier version, due to a cam change.

Now, I read from Dark Helmet, I mean Phantum, (sorry) that the change was due to computer progaming? Is this really true?
It seems that the lower torque curve is much more desireable.
Is it possible to upgrade a 1992 computer work like a '96?

Did I say that someplace? Because actually both are correct. The increased torque at lower RPM's was a result of both the OBDII computer system as well as a change in the cam. I also remember reading something about a change in the head too, but I'm not sure about that.

Actually, they did change the intake manfold in 96. It is a bit more streamline and produces about 15+ pds of torque. They are actually the same fit as the the pre 96 and can be fitted on an older XJ w/ some minimal wire routing, ect.
