Hi, I am new to this forum but I am wondering about my A/C

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee 4.0, the heat works fine but the A/C is not cooling at all. I had the refrigerant checked a less than a year ago. My question is, How often should the refrigerant be checked? What could be causing the problem if it's not the Refrigeran?

Thanks for your help

I bought the designated refrigerant can for my jeep. I connected everything in place, I started the engine, A/C full blast, and the gauge to check the presure on refrigerant goes up and down. I hear the compressor going on and off constantly, when it goes off, the gauge show full gas charge but when it kicks on the measure drops all the way.

Any guess what is wrong with my A/C ??

If you had it serviced and its now not working again, you could have a leak in the system somewhere.

My compressor was doing the same thing, on for a few seconds, off for a few. Had the mechanic at work add a can of freon and all is well. will freeze the b*lls off a billy goat now.

One can of 134a a year is cheaper than having it checked, if it looses 2 cans or goes flat then have it checked. Make sure the bolts at compressor are tight, sometimes they shake loose.........Tony

ecologito, let me know what you found out... I got the same problem but the system I beleive is full of freon. I bought refrigerant from wallmart that came with a gauge and it was completely full, which makes sense cause I had it refilled last year. My compressor is working and if I feel the metal lines I can tell that some coolness is getting in the car, it's just not enough and not cool enough. I'm thinking the condenser might be the culprit....... what have you found?

The condenser is another big deal thing. I had the freon refilled twice and it didn't hold the charge for more than 2-3 weeks (bad condenser).

Only problem is the condenser is a 8-10 hour job as it is directly behind the dash. So make sure before you go in to fix it (apx. $1200 fix from shop).

If your not familiar with a/c units, do yourself a favor and have a reputable shop look at it.
You can spend quit a bit of money on it and still not fix it or worse, damage it.
Just my .02---Good luck-- Rick

I second Ricko70, You need to find the source so you don't screw something else up.
