Has anyone had the exciting experience of replacing the rear main?
I have a 95 ZJ 5.2v8 with a bad rear main seal, at least thats what the dealer says. It leaks oil.
Anyways, I was thinking about taking on this project this summer, just curious as to how hard it is, how long it takes, etc.
Any advice is welcome!

Check out this link http://aarc.epnet.com/application/9107/9107.htm#9107CH08.htm
go to "engine and engine overhaul", "engine mechanical", "crankshaft main oil seal", "removal/installation", "5.2L and 5.9L engines"
To drop the oil pan, you'll need to remove some front end/steering equipment, that's probably the hardest part.
Absolutely! Torque properly! The main bearing cap after reinstalling it.
Torque properly the oil pan, so you don't distort it.
Almost forgot, to get the upper seal out, use a small brass nail, filed down, so there's no point, to carefully push out the seal partway. Once it's out a little, grab it with some needlenose or hemostats and yank it out the rest of the way.

I have changed mine a few times and I had to drop the exhaust to get the pan out .. I needed a really long extension to get to the nuts to drop the exhaust from the manifold but thats all I had to pull off...

If you have some mileage on your ride now may be a good time to change the oil pump since you will have the pan off... And clean the pan real good and maybe slap some paint on the pan ... Hemi orange looks good ... Mr. Green

OK.. You dont have to paint but definatly do change that oil pump its not very expensive ($50 ish) and it could save your engine... (Make sure you prime it..)

It will probobly only take you an hour or so to do it...

It will only take an hour to change the oil pump or to do the rear seal?

Assuming you have all the tools you need and nothing gets broken or is rusted in place you should be able to do it in an hour... Mr. Green
