Hey, Im new to this forum, and hope it will help. Im looking to get a cherokee, and I found a 1990 with the 4.0 and 5spd. Wondering if its a different motor then the newer ones or if its just parts that can be switched over. Also just wondering what to look for on it.

i would tend to say stay away from anything older then 91~92.this is when the 4.0 HO came out.the 87~90's have the renix motor which can be a pain .

Badger makes a good point. The H.O. is one bad ass engine. I would say keep looking till you find one with the H.O. My buddy has a 92 with the H.O. and its great. Got 160ish miles on it and still runs. Got a minor oil leak somewhere and he just replaced the real main seal but if you treat the engine right and do regular matenince it will run forever.

Look for evidence of anything leaking around the differentials, brakes, transfer cas, trans, and the engine (but you probably knew all that already).

Look at all of the suspension components, leaf springs and mounts. Look for excessice rust and cracks. When you get to the front do the same but look at all the steering stuff too. Look for any bushings that look worn or any places that have any play around the bushings. Don't be afraid to reach in and give anything a good tug. If the person really want to sell the car then they will humor you, if they give you a hard time there must be something wrong.
