I'm having trouble staring my 96' XJ. the engine cranks but will not turn over. I thought it was an electrical problem so changed distribator, rotor, plugs and wires still won't start. Sprayed starter fluid in to air intake engine cranked over then stalled out. thought it was a clogged fuel filter replaced still won't work. this problem came on after a day of running around, went to start it the next morning and nothing. Any recommendation to resolve this problem?

Do you get spark? It seems I say this alot lately, check the position sensors per any repair manual. The crankshaft position sensor and the one under the distributor rotor.

could the NSS have anything to do with this. I'm New at this and I've read some listing about not having back up lights and not being able to start their XJ. Well I don't have back up light aswell. and is there any way to check it out before I clean or rebuild it

Badger is correct, a bad NSS will be like trying to start in park.... it won't even turn over. As for backup lights that could be the NSS being dirty. There's a writeup in the Sticky's section on how to clean it.
