after a fun filled four wheeling trip, with too many close calls and a $160 ticket (long story) my speedometer has stopped functioning at all no odometer no speed. Where do I start to figure this out? How could i have killed the speedo? the wires look like they are all there comeing from the output shaft. On a 94 is it electronic? could I have just shorted it out?

I checked the cable comeing out of the tcase and it was ok. It did just start working this morning on the way to drill so im assumeing it just shorted out from water/mud.

The speedo cable connects to the trans, not the tcase. And mechanical cables don't "short". You might have a gear that's getting ready to go on one end of the cable or the other.

great to see people trying to help but if you don't know what your talking about it doesn't really help .sorry guys but read his sig .if the problem is in the vehicle in his sig then its a electronic speedo and it does come out of the T-case.there is no speedo cable so to speak only a group of wires coming out of a the tail housing of the T-case.

now as to what the problem could be.its hard to say it could be short ,it could be the gear is toast on the sender.could be something in the dash.the only thing i can suggest is going to the parts store and buying a Chiltons manual (which is something you should have anyway) it might give you a test or two to do one the sender to see if its fried.

Does a '92 Cherokee have the same setup? My speedo has "hunted" for the last 130K* at speeds above 60-65 mph and finally quit altogether yesterday. To me, this seems like the way a cable would act, not something electronic. Is a '92 model equipped with a cable?

Now my check engine light shows code 15 and it runs really crappy. ("Limp mode"?) Am I looking at a cable replacement or a new gear in the T-case?

Thanks,

Dennis

*I bought it with 200K on it and now it has 333K. "Built Jeep Tough"! Wink

Does this mean no one knows if a '92 has a cable in it?

Pretty sure the 92 has a sensor as well and not a cable.

Thanks Phantom, I crawled under there this morning and found the sensor dangling loose. Just a matter of screwing it back on and voila...
