I currently have a 97 cherokee (XJ) but am thinking of moving up to a grand, as I'm a bit too tall, and my legs don't really fit in my cherokee all that well. So my questions are:

For the years 97-2000 what 4x4 transfer case should I be looking for to get the best offroading ability? I have select-trac in my XJ (2wd, 2wd part time, 4wd full time, 4wd low) and really like it, as it allows me alot of options, but is there one that is superior?

As well, I have heard that the V6 does not save much gas over the V8, and that you should go for the V8? I'd like the extra power and towing ability, but how is it on gas?

Any years between 97-2k that are superior or have any major improvements I should be looking for?

thanks alot guys! I really appreciate your help!

mines a 94

if you find one from the 93-98 years the ZJ body style they tend to be a bit cheaper

98 gives you the 5.9 option, or you could get the 5.2 or the I6

the I6 is pretty stout motor, i like it i havent had any problems with it yet

as for the drivetrain if you can find one without the full time 4wd option especially if your going to wheel it

as for towing id def get a v8, if you do find one from the 93-98 years the 5.2 gives you 3.73 gears

thanks for the replies guys, this is exactly the info I was looking for!

Unforgiven : I'm 6'2" - 6'3" as well, you fit in your zj well?

1fox2go: you said if im looking to wheel a bit, look for one w/o full time 4wd, would the select-trac be a good option? (it allows you either full time or part time 4wd, 4w lo and 2wd) or are you talking more of the command-trac type?

thanks again everyone, really appreciate it

find one that has the 2wd option either way if your goin to wheel or not

it helps gas mileage a bit as wheel as easier on the drivetrain

if you cant find one that way however its a very common and fairly easy swap to change transfer cases

the cases you would want are 231 or 242
