Being Jeep owners, we all know that Jeeps don't get the greatest gas mileage. And with gas prices being what they are, I did some checks over the last couple months with my TJ in various "Jeep" configurations. I don’t know about anyone else, but I found this interesting.

Top Up with no A/C.......19 - 20mpg
A couple times, I almost got 21mpg, and I don’t know how I did it.

Top Down.....................17 - 18mpg
With Bikini top on

Top Up With A/C on…....15 - 17mpg

Just thought I'd share

if i was getting 15 mpg worst case senario in the jeep I'd be happy. Give it a try with the top and doors no side or rear windows, I could swear when my jeep was near stock it was better that way.

So now I'm taking requests?
Hi I'm Casey Kasem, Here's a request from a little girl with no arms and no legs, her song is "Daddy don't you walk so fast"...

Aaaaa, Ok, I'll try it, but I doubt it'll much different than top down.

Stock 2000 TJ with auto trans 3:07 gears and 31" tires.
I get 12mpg - mostly city driving using the cheapest gas I can find.
Hardtop, soft top, no top, doors, no doors - no difference.
I will be making a 200 mile trip (one way) this weekend. We'll see how she does with all interstate driving. I plan on keeping it under 70mph.

I took a trip of more than 3000 miles back in May and my cruise-control-on/freeway-driving/hardtop-on mileage on my new Unlimited w/automatic transmission was 22-23mpg.

Yesterday I ran across the state and back to an annual blues festival - a round trip of 600 miles - with no top on the Jeep. I averaged 16 miles/gallon!! I couldn't believe my eyes. I lost 6 miles per gallon by taking off the top. What the hell??? pull hair

Here are the results from my completely unscientific experiment.
400 mile round trip - 99% interstate - hard top on - cruise set at 70mph all the way.
I got 16.5mpg! That is huge for me. I normally see 12 or less.
I have a 2000TJ with the 4.0 and the three speed auto. Not having that fourth gear hurts but I an very happy with 16.5mpg.

well i gotta hardtop so its always up lol
but i always thought windows up with ac on would be better gas milage as opposed to windows down cause of the drag from the wind coming into the windows

It has been my experience that having the windows down during city (stop and go) driving will yield better mileage than having the AC on but on the highway it is just the opposite. Of course, if it is cool enough to have the windows up and the AC off then you get the best of both worlds.

Well, just as I thought. I did four tanks with the top up and the sides and back off, and there’s no significant difference from having the top down completely…it seemed to net a very small gain of about 1/2mpg.
