I am looking to swap out my Dana 35c rear axel in my '91 wrangler. I have been looking at my options and have come up with a few axel choices. So far, I am looking for a Dana 44 from a '87-'90 Cherokee but am not having much luck finding one. Some other choices brought to my attention were a Ford 8.8" from a '95-'01 explorer or a D44 from a Camanche '87-'90. My mind is set on replacing my D35c with a D44. Does anyone know which of the above mentioned would be the easiest swap or recommend other options for a stronger rear end swap? What are the drawbacks for swaping in a Ford 8.8" rear end as opposed to a D44? Would a lot of modifying have to be done for that swap?

Any recommendations at all for this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The best swap would be out of a MJ but the chance of finding one is slim to none. The next best would be an XJ, you would need to move the spring purches from the top to the bottom of the axle tubes. I just went through this with my 95 YJ. Of course you could do a spring over Mr. Green The advantage to the 8.8 would be disk brakes Very Happy but you can find XJ. A lot of this depends on how much you can do and how many friends you have. If both are low cost go way up Shocked

Let me add my two cents worth... If you're wheel'in the jeep? Don't bother with the 8.8 unless you are a lite peddle driver. The 8.8 has the same problem as the D35 in that they are both C-clip axles. If you do have lots of friends then grab a 9 inch and go with it. It's a little more work but once it's done, its done. You won't have to upgrade till you go really competitive.
