Vechile: 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country 2wd

Background: Bought the jeep from a friend of mine for $500. It was in horible shape and needed lots of work. Replaced every seal (valve covers, oil filter adapter, rear main seal, oil pan), oil pump, and transmission. So it now runs in decent shape with no leaking of oil or transmission fluid.

Problem: Its now time to take it through emissions. If you tap the gas pedal quickly the vechile kind of stals and blows black smoke out the tail pipe. If you ease onto it, it runs fine. I have taken it through emissions twice now and have passed the hydrocarbons with ease, but iam failing the carbon monoxide badly.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Straight from my Emissions textbook:

Excessive CO emissions may be caused by:
-Rich air-fuel mixtures
-Dirty air filter
-Faulty injectors
-Higher-than-normal fuel pressures
-Defective system input sensor
-Plugged PCV system
-Stuck open heat riser valve
-Inoperative or disconnected AIR (Air Injection Reactor) pump
-Engine oil diluted with gasoline

Bad cat = rich air/fuel mixture

I replaced my cat convertor and oxygen sensor on a 87 XJ with 175,000
miles at the time-the outcome was amazing emissions-very low emissions. O2 sensors are one of the things that go on XJ's along with
water pumps. The convertor was a hundred dollar Napa job-my mechanic
said the usually last a year-but I have passed two sets of emissions with it over the last three years_sykes.

87 XJ 4.0L Straight 6 240,000 miles
