I just got a 01 Grand Cherokee and am having problems removing the oil fill cap. it just clicks in bot directions. i have tried pushing down on it but no luck...help!!!

Is the engine hot?

If so, let it cool then try again.

Sounds like the torque-sensing mechanism in the cap (technical for a bunch of plastic teeth that won't let you tighten it too much) has failed. Happened on my '98 Cherokee. Just break off the top part of the cap. Get some vice grips or something of the like to unscrew the cap. Then get a cheapo screw-in oil fill cap from the parts store.

It happens to mine whenever it's hot. You should be able to lay your hand flat on it, apply pressure and turn...it should come right off.

it was because it was hot. glad i didnt break it off yet. of all suvs ive owned this is the 1st one to lock the cap on it when its hot or even warm. thanks again for the info guys.
