No ZJ here, but my cousin just acquired a '96 ZJ with the 5.2L and the Full-Time 4WD TC (not sure the number designation...4FT-N-4LO). Anyway, when the Jeep is backing up and turning, something in the front-end will make a single pop sound. The side of the pop matches the side turning (wheels turned right, right side pop). This happens in either direction. It does not, however, occur when going forward. Anyone have a clue?

Crap.. I call mine rice crispies cause it snaps crackles and pops all the time.. rofl

If you are lifted .. Expect some noise . its the unit body flexing.. If you are stock check U joint and unit bearings and ball joints..

Jack the tire up off the ground .. Then put your hands at 12 and 6 and push pull back and forth.. If you get movement change your ball joints..

Then grab at 3 and 9 and do the same.. Movement means bad hub bearings.. (unit bearing)

Oh... You will need someone to watch those parts while you wiggle.. Cause you cant see them while you are doing it..

Thanks for the tips. Are tie-rod ends another possibility? Any way to check those?

i found a bad shock bushing yesterday...my shock moves from one side of the mount and slams the other side making noise

things like this could be your problem as well

oh and if you did lift it and got a tracbar relocation bracket check that...mine was lose and smacked around up front too

No lift on this ZJ. It's completely stock.

If the tie rod ends are bad you will be able to tell by having someone watch them while you lightly pull the steering wheel from side to side..

That T case is a 249 by the way..

My ZJ poped loudly every time I turned it.
I payed a shop mech. a 6 pack and he used the air wrench to tighten every bolt on the front end for me... "Poof" problem solved and it's been 6mo now.
