Hey all, my 93 GC (straight 6, 4WD All Time) vibrates fairly badly when at an idle. In neutral it's not so bad. I changed out the cap and rotor and the spark plugs, the water pump and serpentine belt along with a bad bushing and pully. It vibrated before all that anyway. I don't think it's the motor mounts because the motor doesn't jump when you shift it in and out of gear. It's got 243K miles on it. Should I leave well enough alone? Any suggestions would be really helpful.

I'd check your tranny and motor mounts. Especially with the amount of miles you have and year. How can you tell the motor is jumping when your shifting the car? Are you talking about your hood open sitting in the driveway?

Yeah, after we got done replacing the spark plugs, cap and rotor we had the hood up and were switching it in and out of gear. Friend said that if it were the engine mounts you'd see the engine jump when you switch it in and out of gear. Any chance it'd be the idle air control motor?

Actually it would be easier to tell if it where in gear then the torque from the engine would give the mounts max flex..

I agree with the other two, probably bad mounts, if it's not, my thought was timing chain. Has it ever been changed? At 243k it should have been. Vibration damper worn? If it's really dirty or worn that could do it too. They're both easy and relatively cheap to do. Good Luck!

I've got the same problem on the exact same Jeep. 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6cyl. I wonder how hard it is to replace a timing chain.

I have a 94 gc, I changed the upper right hand side (if your facing the motor with from the front of the jeep) motor mount and now most of the vibration is gone. didn't take long. me and my dad did it in a an hour or so taking our time. you don't even have to support the motor while doing it, all though you can if you want. Also, I just swapped a np 249 ( second viscous coupler failed) for a np 242 out of a 93 cherokee. Thanks a lot for swamp boy's info for making this possible. Cheers man. Also, i find this helped the vibration as it drive so much smoother. the t case came from a wrecker too, and I was shocked to see the difference. I think eliminating the viscous coupler is half the battle, it eliminated a lot of noise also
