I want to lift my 98 Xj another 2 inches front & rear, i already have a rubicon 3.5" lift with 31's But i would like to try a fit 33's now. Would 2" spring spacers & 2" shackles be a viable way of getting more clearance?? I suppose i would also need an adjustable track rod & transfer case drop kit.... Or am i kidding myself & just suck it up & buy a reputable 5.5" lift kit?? Any advice would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks.

It all depends on how much money you want to spend. A 2" Budget Boost to get to 5.5"s is a viable option on a limited budget. It would only cost around $100 to do so, not including the track bar. However, 3" plus on a 98 you will want to look into getting a new drive shaft instead of the transfer case drop. Not saying the T-Case drop won't stop the inevitable vibes, it all depends on how your XJ takes the lift as I'm sure you are aware they all act differently. Don't forget the shocks, brake lines and disconnects etc, etc...

Yeah, what he said!!!

I NEEDED an SYE when I liftewd to 4.5"!!! There was no doubt about it!
The transfer case drop didn't do the trick (this pic still shows it installed but it has since been removed).

Running 32's.

I trimmed (CUT) right at original line on outside of fender flares.

I then trimmed straight across at front for cosmetic appeal.

I have NOT rubbed these 32's at all.

This is about as severe as I anticpicate, and while passenger side was stuffed up pretty good, I didn't notice any rubbing.

Adding a 2" shackle to a 3.5" leaf spring isn't going to net you 5.5". Even though the math adds up that way, that's not quite how it works out.

The longer shackle will allow more spring travel, so it will let the spring flatten out more at ride height. You'll only get 5" (tops) out of it. Still, with some trimming and the right backspacing, you should get 33's under there. However, with a 2" spacer in the front, it might not sit level. Just something to keep in mind.
