Any advice/info on this subject? I have a 2wd 97 XJ and I would really like to make it 4x4. Aside from the few hardware items, basically all I would need is a 4x4 front axle, driveshaft, transfer case, and new rear driveshaft right?

You'll also need the entire tcase linkage assembly and shifter, as well as a tailcone assembly for the transmission. I've never done this conversion myself, but from what I've read it's actually easier to swap out the entire tranny for one that accepts a tcase.

Can I find a 4x4 Cherokee at a salvage yard and pull everything off of that?

That would be the best way to do it. Just make sure that the gear ratrio of the front axle matchs the rear of yours.

also, check out the 4-sale forum. there's a 97 that's still up for sale, and you could collect all the parts from that (assuming they're the same). don't be fooled, he's still got the car, but not for long.
