I've got a 99 4.0L. I know what the manuf. towing recommendations are...but I was wondering if anyone has used their Cherokee to tow a boat regularly. Not necessarily long distances...less than 60 miles at a time. Looking to purchase a 2004 Malibu, approx. weight (with trailer) nearing 4500-5000 lbs. Currently have a class III/IV hitch.

Will I be alright? Or do I need to make the unfortunate decision to purchase something w/a V8? Will a tranny cooler be sufficient?

Any input- greatly appreciated!

More than a tranny cooler, you need to think about things like the brakes, suspension, wheelbase, etc so as not to endanger everybody else on the road. Wink

Exactly. It's not just a matter of the drive train...it's a matter of the load that is put on the Jeeps structure/frame.

What is the manufacturer's tow rating on your XJ?

even 2k-3k can get a little hairy sometimes if you're not being careful, especially if you do a lot of up and down mountains.

towing capability of a 99 jeep well where do i start i myself am a rec vehicle tech i hook all kinds of trailers to rigs.i pull a travel trailer with my 98 4.0 and ill tell you alot of you guys biuld your jeep for hopping over rocks and 4 feet of mud butt you hook a 4000 pound trailer to it and that same jeep is useless. i have a lift and over load springs my springs are ridged not for long travel (articulation)my jeep is built for pulling not rocks trans cooler free flow exhaust ,free flowing air cleaner ,vented brakes,9000 pound shocks heavey duty steering stablizer.with all iv done my trailer is around 3650 pounds and kids dog and so on its all it can take if you want to pull more than 3800 pounds go get a silverado 02 or newer they are good for 7200 pounds 1/2ton.if you want to biuld your jeep for pulling dont go to a 4x4 store go to a rv center for the right parts to pull with.this is just my opinion some of other people may not agree but its what i do for a living .build trucks to pull.

I tow my 1988 XJ with my 1991 XJ. When I tow it is mainly flat ground
very little hills. The 1991 get pushed on occasion and top speed is about
45-50 mph.Yes the tow hitch is rated at 5000 but the tonque weight is
350 lbs.The gross vehicle weight is 3300 to 3500 on a wet day.
The max weight to pull is about 2500 lbs.So if your trailer weghs 2000 lbs
not to include whats on it you are at the max weight.
