My 18 year old son just bought a 2005 TJ with the 6 speed manual transmission. This is the first Jeep in our family. (Its a bright red beauty) First gear in the 6 speed is very low. Second gear feels like the first gear in most of the other manual transmissions I have driven. My question are:

1. Is first gear a "bulldog" gear, to be used only where a very low gear is needed?

2. Will he hurt the transmission to pull out in second gear?

The owner's manual did not address this.

If you can take off from a dead stop in 2nd gear without having to ride the clutch you're not doing it any harm at all.

I have the 6-speed in my '05 LJ Rubicon, but my first gear doesn't seem that low. Wonder if Rubicons have different ratios. Anyway, I can start in 2nd gear, but it takes a lot of clutch slipping. I'm sure that would wear the clutch out much faster than starting in 1st gear.

I bought an '06 and yes 1st gear is that low on a rubi anyhow. 4.11 gears. It wouldn't be so bad with 3.73 or 3.07 for taking off in first.
I basically use it as a five speed and start off in 2nd with no problem with clutch or lugging. It's still low there as I'm shifting immediately to third.

I was hoping the sixth gear would give better mileage than the previous five speed in fifth, but it turns out it's geared lower.

I have a 06 Rubicon 6 speed also. when I first got it I felt that first gear was way to low also and would start from a stop in second. I asked the dealer if that was ok and he said NO it will wear out your clutch faster, so I went back to starting in first. now that I've put over 5000 miles on it, it seems just fine and not as low as when I bought it. matter of fact everything seems to be working more smoothly now. it used to pop out of reverse real easy too but doesn't do that any more either. I think you kinda have to break it in. Cool

Personally I would only suggest starting in 2nd from a rolling stop. Otherwise, use 1st.

6 speed ratios
1st 4.46
2nd 2.61
3rd 1.72
4th 1.25
5th 1.0
6th .84

1st is a bit lower than the 5 speed it replaces and 6th is also a bit lower (higher numerically). I used to start out in 2nd when I had the stock tires on but when I went bigger I had to quit. Typically 5.0 or lower is considered a "granny" gear.

I have a 2002 jeep TJ with the stock 5 speed manual transmission in it. I have got 4.56 gear in it F/R. the reason i'm asking is because when i'm in fifth gear i am running like about 2300 RPM at about 55 MPH. And i was wondering if the new TJ 6 speed would fit into my 02 jeep with out having to change alot of mecanical parts.

What size tires are you running? I have a '00 TJ, 4.56's, and 35's, NV3550 tranny. I run about 2500 at 70mph. Don't really care to run it any faster than this either. On the highway, I average 17mpg with my current setup. Can't really complain.
