Just throwing this out, make sure you're at TDC on No. 1 on the compression stroke. You could be 180 degrees off. Didn't see that in you previous post. Did you ever have it running or did it not run when you got it? If the distributor was removed that's a possibility.

What year is it?

Timing is not manually adjustable on the 4.0...it's controlled by the computer. My guess is the same...if the distrbutor is between 1 and 4, cylinder #1 is probably on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke (i.e. - not at TDC). Now if you are positive it's at TDC on cylinder #1 and the distributor is well away from plug #1, the timing chain probably jumped one of the gears...meaning it's loose and needs to be replaced.

Hi, i agree with above , to check your valve timing set your ignition timing to number 1 cylinder at TDC , remove rocker cover then check both valves are closed on number 1 ( free play on both rockers) if not valve timing is out! also rotate engine 180 then check valves again if valves are closed look at your dizzy roter, tell us were its pointing!......cya

You could remove the rocker cover as mentioned, or just pull the No. 1 plug and put your finger in the spark plug hole, bump the engine over until your finger pops out. Obviously you'll need a helper.

Or really long arms Very Happy

If thats not it, I agree about the timing chain being bad.

I just got to thinkin. Since the XJ I wrench on doesn't have a distibutor, bear with me.

Can you put the rotor in backwards on these things? Just a thought

The rotor is keyed and will only fit on one way. Wink
