I don't know if it's already in the forums.. i havn't really had the time to go through all of them.. you know with school and all..

I have a Jeep XJ which is built sometime in the late 90's. (i don't know the model year).
When i put the car into reverse, and let the car roll for a second and hit the brakes.. i hear this loud knocking noise coming from the engine area. Does anyone know what the problem is??
It's prob from the tranny, but i just want to know if anyone has this problem and knows how to go about it...

(for pics check out the photos i put up in the photo page..)

Thanks

Check all your front suspension parts including the swing arm bushings for slop. Also, look at your engine and transmission/transfer case mounts for failure. Check driveline U-joints, too.

If its what I'm thinking, I had the same issue on my 94 that I had in Hawaii. You back up and hit the brakes and get this grinding type noise coming from the transmission? That's what I was getting anyway.

Never did find the problem before I sold it.

yea like they said you might wanna check your tranny mount. I had the same type of noise and i looked at my tranny mount(it was wasted) and found it was part of the culprit, so i replaced it. The other part of the noise (grinding from the rear end when turning after a dead stop launch) i believe is coming from the axles. Maybe bearings or shafts. dont know mever pulled them off before.
