Its done 130k miles now and getting a bit noisey, not too bad but I notice it. I have swapped out the oil but no difference (didn't have time to do the filter at the time, is it worth doing?).
Should it be expected to be whining slightly at this mileage? change was much improved with the oil change and it isnt leaking.

changing oil and not the filter is sort of a waste of time. no point in putting clean oil in when your filter is probably clogged up from the first run through.

that being said an oil change won't usually quiet down an engine that is tapping or knocking. either it's not happy with the gas you're feeding it, the timing isn't quite on, or you just have some lifter issues. sometimes a quick can of those off-the-shelf engine restorers help as a bandaid...but sooner or later you may need some more expensive work.
chris (have 174k on the xj, some tapping, but still going strong)

throw a quart of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) in it and run it for a couple of weeks and see if you notice a diff.
