I was wondering what the specifications are for the Cherokee (1996) oil drain plug (i.e. 10mm, fine thread, etc.). I am trying to save a few bucks by buying a basic bolt rather than paying $9.00 for an OEM plug, and I do not want to take mine out and run down to the hardware store in order to match it. The one I have has a chowdered up head.

the head on the drain bolt is much larger than a standard bolt, almost like a washer head bolt. I'd think you'd be better off with spending the $9 on a new OEM bolt than trying to get a hardware store replacement. Nothing sucks more than dripping oil out and finding out late in the day you are low on oil.

The OEM plug has a gasket on it...if you go with a normal bolt I'd use a metal washer followed by some kind of rubber washer to prevent leaks. Hope this helps.

Well I made a post a while back about lessons learned. The oil drain plug is one.

Just buy the OEM and dont worry about it.

I have regreted just recently about OEM prices but it fixed the problem right the first time.
I do believe the thread is 14mm fine thread
