Hi All,

I'm new to the board and recently purchased a 1993 YJ with a 4.0l motor. The previous owner had run straight 30w oil. I changed the oil and put the same brand, but 10/30 per the owner's manual.

Of course, I realize the 10/30 it thinner, but now the engine sounds like a diesel when it's warming up. I can hear a lot of valve clatter. This happens for several minutes until it reaches operating temp (210 or so on the water gauge). And that doesn't make sense b/c you'd think the hot oil would be thinner, and allow even more valve sound.

Just curious as to which weight of oil you all run. I live in north-west WA state, so our winters are relatively mild 30-60F, and our summers are mild too 65-90F.

Thanks!

I run 10w30 in my 2.5 in the summer and 5w30 when the temps get below 30.

Mine has sounded like a diesel for the last 100k miles so I've just gotten used to it.

run a multiple grade oil. It is better on the engine and for mileage if you care. Unless you live in death valley and only drive during the summer then 30w would be fine. It's better for starting and ware on the engine, the multi grade that is.
