The alternator on my 1989 XJ has died. I've got a couple of questions:

1) How many amps are the original alternators? The Checker/Kragen site lists units ranging from 60 something to 100 amps. My XJ is stock, no high end stereo, off-road lights etc. It does have AC.

2) It looks like the easiest way to have clear access to the alternator is to remove the battery and the battery tray. Is this correct? There doesn't look to be too much room in there!

thanks for any help

My 1988 XJ has 90 amp alternator. It is a Delco. Some of the YJs and CJs
came with 60 amp. The best way to remove the alternator is thru the bottom.

Thanks for the info. Is the amp rating marked on the alternator? I want to be sure to get one that is suitable. I don't plan on getting a winch etc. so I don't need an alternator that is rated above what is necessary to have the battery charge correctly with the factory setup.

You can get a higher ouput alternator but a stock XJ will only use what it needs. I just replaced my 6 year old alternator last week Oct 15,06 to be
exact. You could get 90 to 103 amps as a replacement. I paid $103.00
for a reman.LLT warranty. What you might want to consider is a battery
with a higher CCA/CA. This will give you more reserve power.
I run 850 CCA/CA. A stock is 550 CCA/CA. Or go Optima
