My wife took our 2005 WJ Laredo with a 4.7L in for an oil change yesterday, and the crazy thing is when they (the techs) put in 6 quarts it never registered on the dip stick! They called the dealership to make sure 6 quarts was correct (which I know it is), and the dealership confirmed it. They drained the oil, and changed the filter and put in 6 quarts again and it still didn't register on the dipstick.

Any ideas what the heck could cause this? I'm a pretty mechanically inclined guy and have rebuilt motors myself, but I'm baffled at this one.

I'll probably take it to the dealership some time soon to see if they can figure it out, but I'm wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem?

Yes, it should hold 6 quarts - how many quarts did it end up taking to register full on the dipstick?

Did the oil monkey replace the drain plug before putting the oil in?

Apparently the guy working on engines wasn't paying attention when mine went down the line, I ended up with a 3.7 dipstick in my 4.7 engine, and it's about 2" shorter. Took it to the dealer, they took one out of a truck on the lot and I was on my way.

The funny thing was the service guy at the dealership said he had seen the same thing twice in his 20 plus years. Shocked

The place that did the oil change called the dealer to make sure the engine should take just 6 quarts, which is what they put in. They told my wife what was going on and she called me. I assumed it was something relatively harmless since there was never any smoking at all from the motor, so I knew there wasn't an oil consumption issue or blown head gasket, so I just told her to drive it home.
