My 97 TJ seems to have a problem with the AC compressor. It will always run unless I put the switch in the Dash-vent setting. It seems to me that this would be a problem and cause higher fuel consumption.

Is this normal or is there something out of whack?

My TJ doesn't have AC, but when I picked up a used XJ the AC would run all the time and I was told its because its cleaning the air as it enters the cab. I thought they where nuts for telling me that, but appearently Im not the only who often questions it. Wink

Something is out of whack. They will cycle on and off if the system is charged properly. Chances are you need to add some freon.

Sorry, I didn't include enough detail probably.

It does cycle on and off, but should it, even when I am trying to use the heat. Just seems like a waste of power.

Does it run without using as much power in this case?

It should come on when you use the defrost. The compressor removes the moisture from the air for more effective defrost. It shouldn't come on when you're using the heat.

It cycles about every 10 seconds. Is this normal?
