I have been looking for a way to disconnect the front dana 30 of my 98 ZJ- similar in the way that some early cherokees had a vacuum disconnect for their front axle. I know that the vacuum system was junk, but reliable cable disconnect retrofits have become available. Is it possible to fit one of these on a ZJ Dana 30? Or does anyone know of an affordable and reliable axle disconnect that is available? Just removing the front driveshaft is not an option.

There is nothing that meets your criteria of affordable for the your ZJ. You can't retrofit the disconnect setup to your axle because you don't have the disconnect housing or collar on your axle. Your only option is an axle swap from an XJ (not a great idea since the disconnect shafts use the smaller, weaker u-joints) or the Warn small hub kit (you're looking at about $800 if not more).

Why would you want to go backwards to an inferior design?

The only reliable design that I've found has been for people that flat tow vehicles behind RV's. But those cost around $1000. I'm just trying to save fuel. But I guess an axle disconnect is a pretty ineffective way to try to lower fuel consumption. I did come across another option to save fuel and I posted a new thread about it:
