Is anyone familiar with this transfer case? The problem is that the full-time four wheel drive never engages the front axle. Its awful to drive in the snow. The part time which locks the front and rear axles together works properly but only the rear spin in full time. If i raise the jeep on jack stands and put it in full time, the rear only spin. Its not until i chuck the rear wheels will the front start turning. That would seem to defeat the purpose. I figured that if the rear tires spin when up on jack stands the front should be engaging cause this would simulate the rear tires spinning if i was stuck in snow. Is there a viscus clutch inside that may have worn due to improper air pressure or something else? Is there maybe a bad switch? Please help.

no switch to have worn out. Mine used to get stuck in full time if I engaged it, never figured out why. I just grabbed a different 242 and swapped it in. Think I paid $80 for a used one.

Look around, for me it was easier to swap out the Tcase than mess around with fixing it

Just remembered I have a 242 out of a XJ, the chain is shot,a nd it will not bolt in, but the internals are the same as the WJ one, if you want it and are local to the NJ/PA area let me know

Actually, from the description, I'm not sure you have a problem at all. The 242 has an open diff in full time mode, meaning that if any wheel is completely without grip, that is the only one that spins. This mode can be useful for stabilising the vehicle when driving at speed on slippery roads, but is pretty much useless when the going gets tougher; that's the time to slip it into part time 4wd.
