Hey Guys,

I've got a 94 ZJ Ltd 5.2.

My ZJ's got 180k on the clock and while the engine is still happy, the transmission isn't. The 1-2 shift is rough and on the 2-3 shift, the transmission doesn't catch for .5 seconds between the shift.

I'm thinking that within the next two months, I'm going to need to be getting a new tranny. I'm not too excited about spending $1675 for a reman tranny from autozone.

A while ago, I randomly came across this article on jeepforum.com.
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=230700

Now, I realize that's the I-6 and the 42RE tranny.. I've heard the ax-15 would stand up to the extra torque of the 318.

Now, assuming the AX-15 would stand up to the torque, I think the entire process would be the same as in that post, with the exception of the flywheel. Dodge used the 318 in some of their dakotas with a manual transmission, so I'd think that it would be possible for me to use a flywheel from something like a 95 dakota w/ the 318.

So what'd you guys think? Possible or not?

Thanks!!

Well, I don't really see any reason that it shouldn't be possible. I guess I'll just have to try it and find out =P

will the ax15 bolt up to the 318 block?

you could find a manual trans from a dakota, take some measurements and see if it will fit

I'm still doing some research, which I'm basing mostly on what dodge dakotas with the 318 and manual transmission. It lookes like the ax-15 was only used with the v6 dakotas and the new venture 3500 was used with the 318. So, I'll probably end up going with the nv3500 unless I can find some way to bolt the bellhousing for the ax15 onto the 318.

I'll keep you all updated on my impending failure this spring.. or sometime this winter, if the tranny doesn't make it all the way though it. =P
