Could someone describe these to me?

I've been told I have two cracked cylinder heads.

Are these 4 gaskets that bolt on to the engine block above each cylinder? And then the head gasket bolts on over them?

Sorry for the clumsy description.

1996 xj 2.5 turbodiesel.

cheers,

jamie.

Hi there . I guess you will know the answer by now but I have one of these Jeeps and the VM (Italian) engine used in this model has Sectional Heads ...that is it has a separate head for each cylinder even though the main engine block is one piece as is the Head gasket. this arrangement is sometimes seen on stationary or standby engines on fire pumps etc. I love my Diesel Jeep but this Engine is a Mongrel to work on and not for anyone who has no patience...

Gotcha...I thought it may have 2 cylinder heads, one for each pair of cylinders. I've never heard of a head per cylinder but I guess now I have.

a lot of older simpler (before they started making them dohc or just ohc in general , which wasn't that long ago , probably around 97 or so )diesel engines had separate heads , usually 2 cylinders per head . you see it a lot in bigger diesel engines , cat , cummins , Detroit , Volvo etc . you will also see sectional exhaust manifolds and so on .
