Hi team,

Last weekend I had to push my 2001 4x4 auto XJ hard to come out of a deep soft sand slope (dunes) using the 4H 4x4 gear. Finally XJ did the great job after several tries but I could smell something like clutch or something else.

Now I feel the change in the performance, it takes a bit longer time for the auto tranny to shift from low gears to higher gears.

What could possibly be the problem and what's the solution for that ?

Thanks

Farzad

Check transmission fluid. If brown and/or smells burnt then you have done some damage in there.

If it's a manual you may have burned up your clutch, if it's an automatic my guess would be that it got too hot.

It could just be that your car is getting old. My '97 has 113k miles on it's tranny and especially when it's cold, it doesn't like going from gear to gear. I just had a tranny flush done and it hasn't changed much. There are no problems with mine, just old age.

Does the transmission behave (shift) differently in 2H and 4H? I suppose the transfer case could have gotten hot. Check the fluid in there as well. I am assuming the engine runs fine (no vacuum hoses detached). Maybe the smell you had was just hot tires and your ride is just recovering from the abuse.
