I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic. 4.0 High Output.

I have a question about the engine cooling issues.
I seem to have a problem with keeping the engine running cooler.
I haul kayaks on the top, which put a load on my Jeep.
It creates a lot of wind resistance and tends to bring temperatures up.

I have seen people put grille on their hoods.

I was checking out my Jeep and thought of another solution.
I wanted to see if you thought of this technique.

I notice the cowl area of my Jeep where the windshield wiper motor mounts.
This area is wide open. The cowl vent area where the wind shield motor mounts has holes in it. I thought of drilling holes in the back area of the engine bay. I could use a hole saw to make the opening. This would allow the heat to escape out of the back of the engine compartment.
Is this area used for a special purpose for heating and cooling?

Would appreciate any advice on this topic.

What temoerature is it running at? If it's around 210, that's where the 4.0 runs. If it's pushing 220, you can try upgrading to a 3 row radiator and add a tranny cooler and hi flow thermostat housing. Replacing the viscous fan clutch will help as well. Those mods will drop the running temperature by 10-20 degrees.
